I moved to Shenyang to work for the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Palaeoclimatology. I have tried to learn Chinese here but my ability is very basic and understanding people is difficult. I would like to practice with someone who is patient with beginners and gives me time to think and muddle through. I don't want long explanations of how I should have said something (which I won't remember!). Pronunciation tips is ok, particularly tones, and if you happen to notice a pattern in something I do wrong a lot, maybe you could bring it up at the end? But mostly, if you can get what I mean, that is my aim. I can use Skype or Wechat. I would rather keep it in Mandarin in 'my time' and have you type into the chat window sentences or words for me to look up, than break into English. This will also help me add new things to my study after we chat. I would like to do half hour chats with a 50/50 split of Mandarin for me and English for you. Things that might be bonuses: - I have a PhD in palaeontology and have tutored university level science. For any students learning science, this may be a benefit. I am happy to speak about your field, if you would like to get comfortable speaking English to go to conferences or work with scientists overseas. -I am Australian, and have an Australian accent but not a heavy 'Australian drawl'. If you are planning a trip to Australia or to go there for University, getting used to our accent might help you.
